Lafarge worked directly with Fluor Engineering to provide a precast design for a new heavy vehicle wash facility at the Kearl Oil Sands project mine site, located north of Fort McMurray. Thefacility supports a drive-through wash bay that reduces maintenance time and improves efficiency when cleaning the massive 450-ton haul trucks.
The project involved constructing a complete precast building with insulated Double Tee wall and roof panels, precast beams, horizontal insulated spandrel panels, and columns at the overhead doors. These precast elements form the primary structural support, while an independent steel frame inside houses and supports the wash bay equipment. Key features include 24-meter (80 feet) tall load-bearing insulated precast panels that surround the exterior and form the roof. The 23.5-meter by 26-meter facility consists of 26 insulated Double Tee wall panels, four beams, four columns, and eight insulated wall panels, all providing R20 thermal performance.
Given the stringent safety requirements at the site, Lafarge’s installation crews adhered strictly to all safety protocols laid out in the comprehensive safety program. This project demonstrates Lafarge’s expertise in delivering high-performance precast solutions for complex industrial applications while maintaining the highest safety standards.
