Lafarge Precast is proud to contribute to the growth and development of the City of Edmonton. As part of the ongoing improvements to Edmonton’s transit system, Lafarge supplied and installed smooth architectural precast soffit panels for the new transit center in the Castledowns community. This project utilized the innovative Ductal UHPC (Ultra-High-Performance Concrete) material, highlighting Lafarge’s commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for infrastructure projects.
Project Highlights
- Scope: The project involves 44 curved soffit panels and 26 flat soffit panels, each with a remarkable thickness of only ¾ of an inch.
- Efficiency: Installation is scheduled for August 2018, with completion anticipated in just three weeks.
Early Collaboration with Architects
Lafarge’s engaged with the Architect well in advance of the project being tendered. Throughout the project’s development, Lafarge presented multiple precast options, including ultra-thin Ductal (UHPC) panels. The unique properties of Ductal won over the architects for several reasons:
- Design Flexibility: Ductal provided the aesthetic and creative potential required for the project.
- Structural Advantages: Its ultra-thin ¾-inch thickness significantly reduced the overall structural weight.
- Cost Savings: The lightweight nature resulted in reduced structural costs.
- Superior Finish: Ductal delivered a smooth, uniform surface that met the project’s high architectural standards.
This project showcases Lafarge Precast’s ability to blend innovative materials with architectural ambition, setting a new benchmark for transit infrastructure in Edmonton.
