Lafarge’s Bridge Division successfully installed one of two bridges for Alberta Transportation near Medicine Hat, AB, in Cypress County. This project involved the installation of 16 full-depth precast deck slabs (2.85m x 9.47m x 0.235m) and precast back walls, all fabricated by Lafarge Precast. The use of precast deck panels eliminated the need for on-site forming and casting of the deck slab, significantly reducing on-site waste and minimizing the environmental footprint—making precast the more sustainable choice.
By opting for precast, the project not only benefited from a faster construction timeline but also enhanced quality control and long-term durability, ensuring a 75-year lifespan for the bridge components.
The benefits of using precast concrete include:
- Speed of Construction: Precast components are fabricated in advance, allowing for faster installation, with the finished road surface applied directly to the precast panels.
- Quality Control: Rigorous quality checks ensure that all components fit precisely as designed, with accurately located openings, resulting in a proper fit and smoother installation.
- Durability & Sustainability: The precast deck panels are designed with a 75-year lifespan, providing long-term durability and contributing to sustainable infrastructure development.
Lafarge is dedicated to delivering high-quality precast solutions that optimize construction efficiency and support the success of our clients’ projects.
