Lafarge’s extensive expertise in precast projects of all scales proved invaluable when we were brought in as a subject matter expert for the Suncor Coke Drum Integrity Project. Our role focused on providing key design input for precast fabrication and constructability, ensuring the development of an IFC (Issued for Construction) design that could be safely and efficiently fabricated, transported, and installed within the tight 21-day shutdown window at the Suncor site.
The project required all precast components to be completed ahead of the plant shutdown, underscoring the critical importance of timing. By completing all elements in advance, this project highlights the significant advantages of precast concrete in industrial infrastructure, where time, safety, and precision are essential to success.
Lafarge proposed a precast solution to resurface the existing wall with a precast panel, fabricated with a layer of foamcrete for insulation against high heat and an additional layer of steel armor plating for enhanced structural support. This innovative combination offered superior insulation and strength, with the cellular concrete meeting the facility’s stringent insulation requirements while the steel framing reinforced the panels to withstand the extreme conditions of the industrial environment.
This collaborative effort exemplifies Lafarge’s ability to deliver cutting-edge precast solutions that meet both the strict technical specifications and tight construction schedules demanded by high-stakes projects like the Suncor Coke Drum Integrity Project. Our involvement underscores the value of early design input, streamlining the construction process and ensuring that all components were delivered safely, on time, and to the highest standards.
